Crossing Over

Panoramic view from our hosteria in Vilcabamba: Izhcayluma
From Piura, we took a night bus to Loja, Ecuador. Traveling has its highs and lows, and sometimes they happen one after the other. Although the bus ride was a night of being awoken by border guards with guns, winding through stomach-churning mountain roads at an alarming speed, and dealing with the effects of food poisoning (for Liz), we eventually made it to Ecuador and ended up in one of the most beautiful places we have stayed so far.

The hosteria where we stayed had its own system of hiking trails, so we spent our days checking out some of the surrounding countryside, lounging in hammocks, and enjoying the extremely peaceful atmosphere of this beautiful place. We also treated ourselves to some massages ($25 for an hour and a half!).

Nieve (Snow), one of the resident pups!
View from the restaurant over dinner. Yes. It really looked like this.

View of the valley on the waterfall hike
The waterfall

One of the hikes we went on led us through private farmland, over the rivers and through the mountains to a 45 ft. waterfall. It was fantastic! It was a great way to cool off mid-hike, and we didn't even see anyone else the whole time on the trail (aside from a few cows and a donkey...).

On the trail

Pine trees in the midst of the jungle...imported, I think

Brrrr!
